Sizzla Kalonji

Sizzla Kalonji (real name Miguel Orlando Collins) is a Jamaican reggae musician. He was born on 17 April 1976, in St Mary, Jamaica, of devout Rastafari parents and raised in August Town. He is unusually prolific, even by Jamaican standards. Sizzla has worked with such artists as Mobb Deep.

Sizzla, along with reggae recording artists such as Capleton, Buju Banton, and Anthony B, are credited with leading a movement toward a re-embracement of Rastafarian values in contemporary reggae music by recording material which is concerned primarily with spirituality, social consciousness, explores common themes, such as Babylon's corrupting influence, the disenfranchisement of ghetto youth, oppression of the black nation and Sizzla's abiding faith in Jah and resistance against perceived agents of oppression. Sizzla has over 40 full completed albums sold in record stores to date, the most popular which have been "Black Woman & Child" and "Da Real Thing" on the Digital B label, "Praise Ye Jah" on Xterminator, and "Rise to the Occasion" on Greensleeves.

From the inner, rural garrison of the reggae island’s capital of Kingston, Rockfort has bore the next rising star, Beky Glacier. The lyrically prolific, and versatile, singer/deejay has been entertaining venues ranging from the divine church hall to the irreverent and saucy dancehall scenes. From an early age Beky Glacier has honed in on his skills, which over time have fused under the vernacular sing-jay, contributing to the seductive and hypnotic sounds of dancehall, reggae and the Phyah Proof Label’s brand of reggae fusion.

Born Karim Beckett, the Glache as he is aptly nicknamed and partially attributed to his self-indulgence in jewelry, has the appearance of a stocky, athletic build of a soccer player, a pastime he continues to enjoy today. Playing soccer was an escape from the harsh realities of growing up in a hotbed of political and economic strife. In the midst of all the confusion, only music seemed to quell the confusion and provided a temporary ceasefire of the gunplay, allowing the people to “Hold a Vibes” every now and then. Beky has been inspired by the many nights that Rasta men would drum and chant sounds from Count Ossie’s Music Center. Rockfort is one of the areas that serve as the staging grounds for the outbursts accompanying the build up of pressure and frustration of the community, but it also is one of the rare sites with a naturally occurring mineral bath springs, a respite that the locals enjoy. Beky Glacier imbues these contrasting characteristics through his artistic compositions.

Beky Glacier migrated to New York where he spent his high school years at the school of hard knocks, Erasmus High. There he placed first in a number of talent shows, which provided him with the impetus to seek more public stage in neighborhood block parties and dancehall nightclubs in and around the Flatbush areas of Brooklyn. He has worked in and around lineups with prominent artists that include but are not limited to Shabba Ranks, Marcia Griffiths, Maxi Priest, Beres Hammond, Sanchez, and Lexxus. Beky has worked in and around prominent American artists as well, including Chico Debarge, Coco of the former R&B group SWV, Silk, Adina Howard, and Rah Digga. He has also worked with Dylan Dillinger of P Diddy’s Making of the Band. Beky’s work ethic behind the music is equally exhaustive, as he has worked with a list of Jamaica’s legendary producers such as King Jammy’s John John Productions, Dean Frasier and Dr. Paul of Mawga Youth Productions.

Beky’s range and passion for the entertainment industry is extensive and unreserved with appearances in a scene from the movie The Heart of Summer starring Jamaica’s notable Paul Campbell. Glacier plays as the voice of Anancy in the animated series of Jamaican folklore being distributed in the Caribbean and UK. He has also appeared as a guest artist at the dub poetry event hosted by Ras Errol Vibes Fest in Florida. Beky Glacier is well known locally in the Florida area as he has performed at numerous events that include a show with Warrior King in Naomi Gardens, and Mikey Spice in Miami Gardens, and also concert events featuring a host of Jamaica’s popular reggae artists held annually at Bicentennial Park in the Miami area.

The Phyah Proof Label that Beky Glacier has cofounded with longtime associate Trevor “Stinx” De Freitas of Stinx Promotions will be launching his much anticipated introductory album release for Spring 2010 and will be available via iTunes, ReverbNation and other participating music outlets.
